ROUND 6 TIMELINE

On October 1, 2025, the Barrow Community Foundation announced its fifth round of funding available from the Barrow Community Crisis Fund for the Apalachee Recovery.

October 1 : As of this date, the total amount of funds received into the Barrow Community Crisis Fund was $1,035,809.70. A total of $116,000 was paid out in Round 1 Grants, $335,250 in Round 2, $146,975 in Round 3, $94,984 in Round 4,  and $113,826.75. leaving $228,774.02 in the fund balance.

For Grant Round 6, the entire remaining fund balance was released, totaling $228774.02.

October 15:  Grant applications were due.  Applications totaling $253,748 were received.

October 20:  The Barrow Community Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee met to consider applications.  Committee members rated each application according to its priority and urgency in serving the needs of the victims and people impacted.

October 21:  The Board of Directors of the Barrow Community Foundation met to approve the recommendation of the Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee.  Grantees were notified and grant agreements were released.

October 23:  Signed grant agreements were returned to the Foundation and grants were finalized.  Grantees, amounts and purposes were released to the public.

ROUND 6 GRANTEES

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $20,000
to support Challenge Day, a program designed to promote empathy, connection, and positive relationships among students and staff, strengthening the school’s sense of community and belonging.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $12,192
for the creation of a Media Center Calming Space, offering students a dedicated area for reflection, mindfulness, and emotional regulation in response to the ongoing healing needs following the tragedy.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $10,146
to establish a Media Center Makerspace, providing students with creative outlets that foster problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration in a supportive learning environment.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $6,000
to fund ExploreLearning Gizmos, an interactive digital resource that supports hands-on learning and helps students re-engage academically following disruptions to instruction.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $30,000
to provide Advanced Placement Funding for Spring 2026, ensuring equitable access for students to pursue rigorous coursework and earn college credit despite financial hardship.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $17,910
to extend support for an On-Site Substitute Teacher, allowing faculty to take short mental health breaks or attend counseling appointments while maintaining consistent classroom instruction.

BARROW MINISTRY VILLAGE – $72,500
to expand the BRANCH Resilience Center, offering trauma-informed services including music therapy, fitness programs, critical incident stress management training, and the addition of a trained therapy dog to serve both counseling clients and school staff.

BRIGHTPATHS – $20,000
for The Resilient Parent Project, providing workshops and resources that empower parents to support children’s emotional recovery and strengthen family resilience in the aftermath of the crisis.

FREEDOM PATH COUNSELING – $10,000
to expand the Apalachee Recovery Program, offering targeted mental health services and counseling to students and families affected by the events of September 4.


Not every grant submitted was awarded.  Some proposals did not meet criteria as specific crisis responses to contribute to the Apalachee recovery, and were denied. Remaining funds from this round ($32,319.47) will be held in an account at Apalachee High School, providing administrators discretion to address future needs as they arise in support of students and staff.

 

PREVIOUS ROUNDS

ROUND 5 TIMELINE

On August 1, 2025, the Barrow Community Foundation announced its fifth round of funding available from the Barrow Community Crisis Fund for the Apalachee Recovery.

August 1 : As of this date, the total amount of funds received into the Barrow Community Crisis Fund was $1,012,730. A total of $116,000 was paid out in Round 1 Grants, $335,250 in Round 2, $146,975 in Round 3,  and $94,984 in Round 4, leaving $319,521 in the fund balance.

For Grant Round 5, 50% of the fund balance will be released, totaling $159,761. Remaining funds will be held for intermediate and long-term needs in future grant rounds.

August 15:  Grant applications were due.  Applications totaling $312,816.60 were received (195% of available funds).

August 18:  The Barrow Community Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee met to consider applications.  Committee members rated each application according to its priority and urgency in serving the needs of the victims and people impacted.

August 19:  The Board of Directors of the Barrow Community Foundation met to approve the recommendation of the Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee.  Grantees were notified and grant agreements were released.

August 19:  Signed grant agreements were returned to the Foundation and grants were finalized.  Grantees, amounts and purposes were released to the public and checks mailed to grantees.

ROUND 5 GRANTEES

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $10,000 to support a day of service empowering students to engage with the community to commemorate the anniversary of the tragedy, honor those who were impacted and express that love will prevail.  Funds will be used to conduct service projects to support charitable organizations throughout the county.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $15,000 In the aftermath of Sept. 4th, students found their mental health to be heavily impacted by their environment. As a result, numerous requests for brighter colors, a positive space, and fun designs on the walls of AHS came in. AHS is working with non-profit, Paint Love, and a professional muralist to engage students in designing and painting a mural in AHS to promote joy, positivity, and encourage the growth in all who enter the space. Students and staff who wish to participate in painting will be lead through an art therapy exercise before adding color to the wall themselves. The mural will be located outside of the counseling suite, near the student wellness room.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $6,000 After receiving feedback from partners with the National Mass Violence Center, AHS decided to bring in guest speaker Chris Singleton to engage students and staff on the anniversary of the tragedy. He is a former pro baseball player who was highly impacted by the AME Church shooting in Charleston, SC where his mother was killed. He speaks about loving your neighbor, overcoming adversity, and unity. https://www.chrissingleton.com/

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $17,910 to extend the availability of a full-time on-site substitute teacher to allow teachers and staff to step away from their classrooms for short mental health breaks or to attend therapy appointments as needed.  Two substitutes were originally funded for the 2024-25 school year in Rounds 1 and 2, and this grant will allow one substitute to remain through the first semester of the 2025-26 school year.

KATE’S CLUB – $15,000 Kate’s Club, a non-profit mental health provider, was invited by Apalachee High School to provide: Grief Support Groups for 45-60 minutes once each week for 10 weeks. Staff Monthly Support in a one-hour monthly drop-in group for faculty and staff. Student Monthly Support in a one-hour monthly drop-in for students who do not need to meet once a week but still want to know they are not alone. One Year Anniversary Support through a service project from 9:30-11:30AM and 4 thirty-minute sessions with students in the afternoon.

BARROW MINISTRY VILLAGE – BRANCH RESILIENCE CENTER – $30,000 to open the BRANCH, a local Resilience Center. Programs will include music therapy and physical fitness designed around our trauma responses, Critical Incident Stress Management classes for public safety departments, school staff and mental health professionals, as well as materials and supplies needed to serve clients. Barrow Ministry Village will also utilize the grant funds to purchase and train a therapy dog for the counseling center that will be utilized with clients as well as when needed at Apalachee High School and even in the court as the trial and sentencing moves forward.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $3,800 to replace school gardens used for instruction by the agriculture program which were lost due to the placement of temporary classroom pods to replace the classrooms that were closed after the incident.  Funds will allow students to replace the raised beds to support the study of horticulture.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $1,300  requested by guidance counselors to offer sound healing and further their already established Breathe for Life skills, which was funded in earlier rounds. Limited physical exercise/mediation sessions will be provided and sound healing will be offered to classrooms/advisement.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $2753 to install an sound system for the weight room so that important announcements and emergency alerts can be heard by students and staff.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – 12,063.75 for instructional software to help overcome learning loss due to school closure and absenteeism in the aftermath of the tragedy.  This software package will allow teachers to assess students and provide instruction to help students recover. The grant provides two programs to address both math and language arts.

Not every grant submitted was awarded.  Some proposals did not meet criteria as specific crisis responses to contribute to the Apalachee recovery, and were denied.  Funds totaling $43,934.25 were retained and will be included in Round 6.

Round 6, the final round, will open October 1.  The fund total will be updated and 100% the remaining funds will be released.  Grant applications will be due October 15, 2025.

 

ROUND 4 TIMELINE

On April 1, 2025, the Barrow Community Foundation announced its fourth round of funding available from the Barrow Community Crisis Fund for the Apalachee Recovery.

April 1 : As of this date, the total amount of funds received into the Barrow Community Crisis Fund was $1,006,248. A total of $116,000 was paid out in Round 1 Grants, $335,250 in Round 2, and $146,975 in Round 3, leaving $408,023 in the fund balance.

The amount of $204,012, which was 50% of the fund balance, was released to be be distributed in Round 4. Remaining funds were held for intermediate and long-term needs in future grant rounds.
April 17:  Grant applications were due.  Applications totaling $209,934 were received (103% of funds available).

April 21:  The Barrow Community Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee met to consider applications.  Committee members rated each application according to its priority and urgency in serving the needs of the victims and people impacted.  A recommendation was agreed upon to award $94,984 to partially-fund or fully-fund 5 of the 9 applications received. While all of the applications received were for worthwhile projects to benefit the community, some did not specifically meet the requirements of the crisis fund as they did not directly address strategies to assist in the Apalachee recovery. Applications that were not fully funded in Rounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 may be revised and resubmitted for consideration in Round 5.

April 22:  The Board of Directors of the Barrow Community Foundation met and approved the recommendation of the Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee.  Grantees were notified and grant agreements were released.

April 28:  Signed grant agreements were returned to the Foundation and grants were finalized.  Grantees, amounts and purposes were released to the public and checks were mailed to grantees.

ROUND 4 GRANTEES

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $5600 to provide to provide privacy partitions to convert a classroom into two private spaces to conduct private therapy sessions for students and faculty.  These spaces will be used by the two on-site mental health clinicians who were funded in Rounds 1 and 2.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $48,150 to provide the RISE for Leaders curriculum to provide mental health and trauma recovery services for faculty and staff.  This evidence-based program was developed and is facilitated by the University of Colorado, leaning into their decades of research in trauma recovery following the Columbine and Aurora incidents.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $14,184 to provide for the upkeep of a second on-site therapy dog at the school.  The therapy dogs have been cited by students and faculty as among the most impactful interventions that have been employed in the recovery.  Requirements for upkeep include food, grooming, veterinary services, training, insurance and other costs to maintain the dog for four years.

PROJECT ADAM – $17,0050 to provide outpatient adolescent trauma recovery and addiction treatment. In addition to its inpatient adult facility, Project ADAM seeks to expand its adolescent program to provide services to Apalachee students and family members who are suffering from trauma and substance abuse in response to the tragedy.

AMAZING FRIENDS CLUB – $10,000 to partially fund a request to provide expanded services to individuals with developmental disabilities who were impacted by the events of September 4.  Students and residents with special needs are greatly affected by minor changes and events that occur daily, so an event like this has a tremendous negative impact on their overall well-being and mental state. Funds will be utilized to provide daily services for this underserved and highly impacted population.

Round 5 will open August 1.  The fund total will be updated and 50% of the remaining funds will be released.  Grant applications will be due August 15, 2025.

ROUND 3 TIMELINE

On January 15, 2025, the Barrow Community Foundation announced its third round of funding available from the Barrow Community Crisis Fund for the Apalachee Recovery.

January 15 : The total amount of funds received into the Barrow Community Crisis Fund was $984,275. A total of $116,000 was paid out in Round 1 Grants, and 335,250 in Round 2, leaving $533,025 in the fund balance.

The amount of $266,512, which was 50% of the fund balance, was released to be distributed in Round 3. Remaining funds were held for intermediate and long-term needs in future grant rounds.

January 30:  Grant applications were due.  Applications totaling $186,975 were received (70% of funds available).

February 3:  The Barrow Community Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee met to consider applications.  Committee members rated each application according to its priority and urgency in serving the needs of the victims and people impacted.  A recommendation was agreed upon to award $144,980 to partially-fund or fully-fund 6 of the 8 applications received. Those applications that were not fully funded in Rounds 1, 2, and 3 may be resubmitted for consideration in Round 4.

February 4:  The Board of Directors of the Barrow Community Foundation met and approved the recommendation of the Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee.  Grantees were notified and grant agreements were released.

February 11:  Signed grant agreements were returned to the Foundation and grants were finalized.  Grantees, amounts and purposes were released to the public and checks were mailed to grantees.

ROUND 3 GRANTEES

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $7980 to provide the LIFT Curriculum, an evidence-based online mental health support program, available to students and faculty 24 hours a day. The application allows users to explore mental health issues in privacy and at their own pace. Students will be referred to the program by counselors and will be allowed to opt-in.  This license provides 500 seats and can be expanded in the future if necessary.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $50,000 to replace the sound equipment in the AHS gym.  The current system is in poor condition due to age and produces a popping sound that is similar to gunshots. Immediate replacement of the system is necessary both to eliminate the re-traumatizing effect of the popping sound and to ensure that students and faculty can communicate effectively in the gym in the event of an emergency.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $10,000 to assist students with the cost of Advanced Placement Exams.  Due to the tragedy, students have lost valuable instructional time and have endured significant distractions from their studies.  This has caused many high-performing students to feel that registering for the AP Exams pose a high financial risk.  The test cost $99 each ($57 for students with free or reduced lunch) and some students take more than one exam.  By offsetting the cost of the exam, more students will be encouraged to attempt the exams, which will provide college credit for qualifying scores.  These credits represent substantial savings of tuition and fees and can help students finish their degrees early. Having students successfully complete the exams also helps the school remain qualified to offer the classes to future students.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL) – $17,000 to train 20 teachers to become Breathe for Change instructors.  This is a certified wellness and yoga program to provide teachers some trauma-informed tools and strategies to begin their own healing and support students through recovery in the coming months/years. It is intended to reshape the school’s culture and help teachers be able to create safe and calm spaces within their classrooms. This funding was specifically requested by AHS teachers.

BARROW MINISTRY VILLAGE – $50,000 to open a Resilience Center to serve families who have been impacted by trauma from the Apalachee incident over the next several years. Barrow Ministry Village will work with a group of consultant who have helped open numerous Centers around the nation following incidents of mass violence. The Center will help clients in many aspects of the healing from this event with a comprehensive case management program that will including making referrals to all forms of therapy, providing basic needs, filing paperwork with the state in order to receive available funds for victims of crime and so much more. This grant will; be used as part of the startup for purchasing technology and furniture for the center as other grants are pursued. The center will provide the needed assistance now, and into the future.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY – $10,000 to provide financial support for housing, utilities, food and other basic needs for families who lost wages due to school closings following the incident. This award provides additional funding to address the January school closing.

Round 4 will open April 1.  The fund total will be updated and 50% of the remaining funds will be released.  Grant applications will be due April 17, 2025.

ROUND 2 TIMELINE

On November 1, 2024, the Barrow Community Foundation announced its second round of funding available from the Barrow Community Crisis Fund for the Apalachee Recovery.

November 1: The total amount of funds received into the Barrow Community Crisis Fund was $786,500. A total of $116,000 had been paid out in Round 1 Grants, leaving $670,500 in the fund balance.

The amount of $335,250, which was 50% of the fund balance, was released to be distributed in Round 2. Remaining funds were held for intermediate and long-term needs in future grant rounds. See more about our grantmaking policy in FAQ.

November 15:  Grant applications were due.  Applications totaling $461,003 were received (137% of funds available).

November 18:  The Barrow Community Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee met to consider applications.  Committee members rated each application according to its priority and urgency in serving the needs of the victims and people impacted.  A recommendation was agreed upon to award $335,250 to partially-fund or fully-fund 11 of the 15 applications received. Those applications that were not fully funded in Rounds 1 and 2 may be resubmitted for consideration in Round 3.

November 19:  The Board of Directors of the Barrow Community Foundation met and approved the recommendation of the Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee.  Grantees were notified and grant agreements were released.

November 21:  Signed grant agreements were returned to the Foundation and grants were finalized.  Grantees, amounts and purposes were released to the public and checks were mailed to grantees.

ROUND 2 GRANTEES

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM – $90,675 to provide two full-time, school-based mental health clinicians to provide free counseling to all students and staff at Apalachee High School.  This allows those who were injured, those who are grieving the loss of friends or teachers, those who were direct witnesses to the incident, and any others who suffered trauma due to the tragedy to be served on-site during the school day.  This eliminates insurance, transportation, appointment scheduling and other barriers to care and minimizes the loss of valuable instructional time.  Partial funding for the first clinician was awarded in Round 1.  This award fully funds the remainder of the initial request, which was to provide two clinicians.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM – $38,805 to provide two full-time, dedicated substitute teacher at Apalachee High School.  These positions will provide relief for teachers who need to step away from their classrooms to assist in their trauma recovery or other personal needs. Partial funding for the first substitute was awarded in Round 1.  This award fully funds the remainder of the initial request, which was to provide two substitutes.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM (APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL): Three grants to reduce the effects of post-traumatic stress on students and faculty:

$9,500 to provide four years of support for a donated permanent, trained therapy dog to serve students and faculty at the school.  This grant will help provide liability insurance for the handler, veterinary care, grooming, supplies and annual training for handlers.

$5,670 for materials to eliminate loud, triggering sounds from equipment used in the weight-room.  The sound of weights dropping on concrete can be startling and similar to the sound of the tragic incident, and can be heard in adjacent classrooms.

$7,521 for materials and furnishings to reconfigure ten classrooms in the immediate vicinity of the incident.  Making these spaces look and feel different from the day of the incident helps students and teachers focus on learning rather than being constantly reminded of the tragedy.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM (APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL) – $47,331 to offset the loss of funding to the school due to the cancellation of events in the aftermath of the incident.  Funds raised by football ticket sales, concessions and other events support other sports, band, and extracurriculars throughout the school year.  Without the recovery of these lost funds many students would be deprived of the opportunity to participate in activities that are important to them, further increasing the impact of the tragedy.

BARROW MINISTRY VILLAGE – $73,500 to provide free counseling services to individuals who suffered trauma due to the incident and to provide a program to coordinate care among outside therapists to manage the high volume of need.  This award fully funds the remainder of the initial request in Round 1, and provides additional funding for Critical Incident Stress Management classes for mental health professionals, school personnel, public safety professionals and faith-based leaders and the addition of a part-time trauma counselor.  https://www.barrowministryvillage.org/

BOWEN WALKER FOUNDATION – $4,200 for therapy services that were paid for by the organization for the injured and the families of the deceased in the immediate aftermath of the incident. https://www.bowenwalkerfoundation.com/

BARROW COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE EMPLOYEE FUND – $26,000 to design and equip a serenity room for first responders.  This room will provide a quiet place for personnel to receive counseling, spend time in quiet solitude and deal with emotions from the incident at AHS and other tragic events that occur frequently in this line of work. The grant will also provide training for five addition critical incident response facilitators.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY – $10,000 to provide financial support for housing, utilities, food and other basic needs for families who lost wages due to school closings following the incident. BARROW COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT – $22,046  for the purchase of  Genesis Rabbit Tools, which are specialized forcible entry devices that allow first responders to gain rapid access through secure doors, greatly reducing response time during critical emergencies.  This capability enhances the overall safety and preparedness of the entire community, and will directly benefits all schools in the event of emergencies.

Round 3 will open January 15.  The fund total will be updated and 50% of the remaining funds will be released.  Grant applications will be due January 30.

ROUND 1 TIMELINE

On September 30, 2024 (18 business days following the incident) the Barrow Community Foundation announced its first round of funding available from the Barrow Community Crisis Fund for the Apalachee Recovery.

September 30:  Funds totaling $232,000 had been received to date, and 50% was released according to the established grant-making policy, which allows long-term needs to be considered (see FAQ for more information on this policy).  A total of $116,000 was made available in Round 1.

October 15:  Grant applications were due.  Applications totaling $295,510 were received (254% of funds available).

October 21:  The Barrow Community Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee met to consider applications.  Committee members rated each application according to its priority and urgency in serving the needs of the victims and people impacted.  A recommendation was agreed upon to award $116,000 to partially-fund or fully-fund 10 of the 14 applications received. Those applications that were not fully funded in Round 1 may be resubmitted for consideration in Round 2.

October 22:  The Board of Directors of the Barrow Community Foundation met and approved the recommendation of the Crisis Fund Grantmaking Committee.  Grantees were notified and grant agreements were released.

October 24:  Signed grant agreements were returned to the Foundation and grants were finalized.

October 25:  Grantees, amounts and purposes were released to the public and checks were mailed to grantees.

ROUND 1 GRANTEES

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM – $30,225 for initial funding to provide a full-time, school-based mental health clinician to provide free counseling to all students and staff at Apalachee High School.  This allows those who were injured, those who are grieving the loss of friends or teachers, those who were direct witnesses to the incident, and any others who suffered trauma due to the tragedy to be served on-site during the school day.  This eliminates insurance, transportation, appointment scheduling and other barriers to care and minimizes the loss of valuable instructional time.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM – $12,935 for initial funding to provide a full-time, dedicated substitute teacher at Apalachee High School.  This position will provide relief for teachers who need to step away from their classrooms to assist in their trauma recovery or other personal needs.

APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL – $7,862 to provide furnishings to convert space at the end of K-Hall into a calming area where students can participate in small-group therapy sessions, meet with counselors, or take time to regroup quietly.

BARROW COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM – $6,588 to support family of the deceased with funeral travel costs and other personal expenses related to the incident.

BARROW MINISTRY VILLAGE – $20,000 to provide free counseling services to individuals who suffered trauma due to the incident and to provide a program to coordinate care among outside therapists to manage the high volume of need.  https://www.barrowministryvillage.org/

BARROW FIRE FOUNDATION – $15,000 to expand the Critical Incident Stress Management program, a comprehensive, systematic program designed to provide emotional and psychological support to individuals who have experienced traumatic incidents to help individuals cope with immediate and long-term emotional impacts.  Services include group debriefings and individual counseling sessions for students and staff impacted by incidents in the school environment, and fostering a supportive atmosphere for emotional healing. The CISM team provides immediate interventions following incidents to support individuals, including students, school staff, emergency responders, and community members affected by critical events.
